  • Tower-Mounted FOD Detection System | Airport Runway Foreign Object Debris Radar | Haisen Global

Tower-Mounted Airport FOD Detection System — Radar + Optical Runway Monitoring

  • Product Overview

The Tower-Mounted FOD Detection System is a permanently installed, radar-plus-optical solution that continuously scans an airport runway, taxiway, or apron for foreign object debris (FOD). It automatically detects, localizes, and verifies debris in real time, then alerts the airport control center within seconds — before any aircraft encounters it on the surface.

A tower-mounted FOD detection system is a fixed radar and camera installation that continuously monitors airport pavement for foreign object debris, detects objects as small as 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm, reports each detection with a location accuracy better than 3 meters, and maintains a false-alarm rate of less than one event per day. [GEO-optimized definition block]

Developed by Tianjin Xinlong Airport Technology (Haisen Global's parent company) and certified to the technical standards of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the system fuses millimeter-wave radar with high-definition night-vision optics to deliver reliable, all-weather runway surveillance that traditional visual inspection cannot match

Foreign objects left on airport movement areas — runways, taxiways, and aprons — can be ingested by aircraft engines or destroy tires on impact, causing damage that is extremely expensive to repair. Global losses from FOD are conservatively estimated at USD 3–4 billion per year, and this figure excludes injury compensation, flight cancellations, and reduced transport capacity.

Historical incidents underscore the stakes. Air France Flight 4590 (July 25, 2000) and Japan Airlines Flight 61 (May 12, 2009) both suffered FOD-related damage with severe consequences. A single undetected object can escalate from a runway closure to a catastrophic accident.

Beyond direct damage, FOD events carry operational costs that are frequently undercounted: runway closures during debris search, aircraft go-arounds, gate congestion, and cascading schedule disruption across an airline's network. Automated FOD detection converts this reactive, high-risk process into a proactive, measurable safety program.

    How the System Works

The system operates on a continuous detect-verify-dispatch loop:

    1. Radar scanning — The millimeter-wave radar continuously scans the runway surface and detects the presence of a foreign object, measuring its distance and position.

    2. Optical verification — On detection, the system automatically calls the HD night-vision camera, which rotates to the target location and captures imagery for confirmation.

    3. Automatic classification — The platform compares the image against known-object profiles to determine whether the alert is genuine FOD or a benign object such as a runway marking.

    4. Control-center alert — Confirmed events are reported to the central control system with an auto-generated serial number, location, distance, and threat level.

    5. Field dispatch — A push notification and self-navigation route are sent to the mobile app, guiding on-site staff to the object for secondary confirmation, photographs, and disposal.

    6. Record & analyze — Every event is stored, feeding heat-map and statistical analytics that inform preventive maintenance and continuous improvement.

    System Management Software

The control software is the operational brain of the FOD detection system. It supports up to 12 radars and 12 high-definition cameras, presents real-time alerts for all detected objects, and lets operators control each radar node independently from a single interface.

    Recommended Deployment Plan

After evaluating safety requirements, radar performance, visible-light lens capability, and cost-effectiveness, the optimal configuration covers approximately 400 m of runway per detection node. For a standard ICAO E-grade 3000 m × 60 m runway, eight detection systems are deployed.

    Certification & Proven Results

Real-world usage data from multiple Chinese airports confirm that the Haisen Global FOD detection system meets — and in some core indicators surpasses — the FOD detection capability requirements specified by CAAC technical standards. The system has passed CAAC testing and been officially published.

    · Electromagnetic environment analysis confirms no interference with airport communication, navigation, or surveillance equipment; equipment operates normally during aircraft take-off and landing.
